The following event occurred after Elvis Presley's 1976 concert in Des Moines, Iowa, which was held at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Kim Smith and some of her teen-aged girlfriends were cruising around town together acting silly, laughing and having lots of fun. They spotted a large caravan of cars exiting the Hotel Fort Des Moines including a long white limousine. Through the window of the limousine, the girls could clearly see The King of Rock and Roll as well as members of his entourage, A.K.A. The Memphis Mafia! Kim and the girls screamed at the top of their lungs in excitement and decided to follow the entourage they made their way to Fleur Drive, which leads to the airport. The girls managed to catch up and were driving alongside of the Limo when Kim, sitting in the back seat on the passenger's side, decided to seize the moment. She rolled down her window and leaned out as far as she dared while several of her friends struggled to hold onto her legs so she didn't topple out of the car! With both cars speeding along at approximately 45 M.P.H. Kim stretched her arms toward the famous silhouette clearly visible though the window. As she pressed her palm flat against the limousine's window she felt an almost electric thrill charge through her body as Elvis Presley pressed his palm flat against the window from inside of his car! The two cars sped along for a moment with Kim leaning out the window, her palm pressed against Elvis' palm, separated only by the glass of the window as the other teenagers came unglued and went into hysterics! Kim and her friends drove around all night telling every friend they saw about their chance encounter with the most influential figure in the field of entertainment.

EARLY ROCK-A-BILLY ELVIS!

Pat Buechler was a high school student in Atlantic, Iowa when she heard Elvis Presley was going to be performing in Omaha, Nebraska. She asked several of her friends if they wanted to attend the show but "They didn't even know who Elvis was!" Pat ended up driving to the show by herself! Here are some of her recollections of seeing a very young Elvis. "I remember his band was very small, maybe four instruments including Elvis playing his guitar. " "I believe he had a drummer at the show, but the only thing I focused on was Elvis, his energy was just incredible!" "The arena wasn't very crowded because he had just started and many people weren't aware of who he was and what songs he had recorded. I am just thankful I was able to see him in person."  "He was bigger than life when he took the stage. Elvis had a presence. There was a magic that surrounded him."
